The City of Austin, Austin Transportation seeks to fill three Transportation Engineer openings. These positions will be filled as Graduate Engineers (EIT) to an experienced professional licensed transportation engineers. The ideal candidates will embrace innovative solutions in the review of complex transportation engineering plans and proposals related to implementing transportation control devices; designing transportation system improvements; and responding and resolving technical questions from the community, engineering professionals, construction personnel, or other government agencies service requests on behalf of the Austin Transportation Department’s Transportation Engineering Division. The Transportation Engineer will review and make recommendations to complex plans and development proposals related to transportation improvements; consider the economic impact to the public and the use of publicly funded projects; and demonstrate transportation engineering industry leadership through successful planning and implementation of state-of-the practice transportation planning, transportation engineering operations concepts, and principles.
Austin leaders and the community have prioritized and created a compact and connected community in Imagine Austin, the City’s comprehensive plan. These Transportation Engineers will be a champion for a comprehensive outlook on transportation, and will work to coordinate the physical form of Austin — how it’s organized and how it is built – with our transportation network. The ideal candidate will incorporate a Complete Streets concept that streets should be designed for all users regardless of age or mode; incorporate small area plans, transportation master plans, and regional partnerships; and achieve the goal of a compact, connected Austin that is less car-dependent and more accommodating to walking, bicycling, and transit.
Current challenges include responding to the community and City leadership requests for various transportation improvements and changes. Safe, efficient, and innovative transportation operations continue to be a top priority for the community and the City. The Transportation Department receives approximately 10% of the more than 216,000 3-1-1 Customer Service Requests received by the City of Austin. The Transportation Engineer will respond to citizen requests and play a key role in presenting the best options that the City can offer to its residents.
Candidates will bring excellent oral and written communication skills to deliver presentations to the public, City Council, or customers; represent the City at public meetings with neighborhood groups, Commissions, Boards, and agencies; and prepare and/or review engineering drawings and feasibility reports, conduct analysis, prepare final plans, and approve, process, and seal plans/specifications/construction documents. The Transportation Engineer will use TMUTCD, NACTO, AASHTO, and other transportation engineering guidelines to respond to citizen transportation safety concerns and develop appropriate solutions.
The position requires graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job plus 2 – 6 years of engineering experience acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer. The candidate must have an Engineer In-Training Certification or State of Texas Professional Engineer License or be able to obtain Texas engineering license within six months of starting employment.
