Here's where you come in:
We are currently seeking a Fire Protection Design Manager to lead a design team as a member of our growing Western Washington Fire Protection Special Projects Group (SPG). Our Fire Protection SPG team is primarily responsible for fire sprinkler retrofits, buildouts and any other modifications needed to existing facilities.
You're great at:
Plans, prioritizes, schedules, supervises and delegates to design team and sub-contracted designers. Provides timely feedback to team.
Refines management skills to assess, in advance, the need for additional staff to complete design work on schedule.
Coordinates with project managers to review the project as the design develops.
Coaches and mentors design team; conducts annual goal plan and quarterly reviews for all members of design team.
Assists in planning and leading training sessions for design team.
Training support utilizing AutoCAD, AutoSPRINK and Navis.
Supervises “construction administration” design activities on projects.
Works with Project Managers, Project Engineers and or Estimators to monitor project design budgets.
Tracks project design scope through all milestones; assists project managers identify potential design change orders.
Documents project correspondence, issues, decisions and direction.
Archives projects according to engineering administrative procedures.
Assists & trains engineers confirming and documenting existing site conditions.
Coordinates with sales leads, cost estimators, Project Manager’s and detailing on the development of design projects.
Ability to support sales efforts and provide engineering analysis to support sales.
Actively participates in the early phase of designs. Includes brainstorming to challenge the design concepts and develop innovative design approaches.
Establishes and maintains design best practices including: design standards, standardized details and standardized materials processes. Develops initiatives and strategies to promote and maintain the success of the SPG team.
Participates in the BIM/CAD environment and maintains all related fire sprinkler supporting documents.
Reads and interprets construction documents that include drawings, specifications, and contracts and actively participates with pre-planning the overall fire sprinkler system design approach. Performs a variety of early design tasks to help teams determine a preferred project direction.
Designs and lays out fire sprinkler systems for existing buildings utilizing CAD and/or AutoSprink software. Adheres to NFPA, FM Global, local and other national codes as appropriate. Completes designs with a level of quality in the design documents that leads to a minimum amount of clarification required during construction.
Performs hydraulic and seismic bracing calculations. Includes both manual methods as well as with packaged software.
Participates in field surveys as needed.
Prepares design budget proposals for a variety of project types that appropriately reflect the effort required on any given project.
Owns all aspects of design and materials/ equipment selection.
Coordinates with other trade design teams (structural, architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical, etc).
Attends early meetings with owners/developers/general contractors.
Assists with developing basis of design.
Establishes a line of communication with customers and upper management.
Coordinates with other trades or internal McKinstry teams as necessary.
Enhances department and organization reputation by participating in professional groups.
What we would like to see from you:
NICET III Certification or higher preferred.
Engineering Degree or equivalent preferred.
Eight (8) years of experience in fire sprinkler design/ engineering.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook
Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Navis required. Revit and AutoSPRINK preferred.
Experience in managing a design team.
Strong knowledge of NFPA and IBC Building & Fire Codes.
