Positions & Duties
The Environmental Services Department is recruiting for a Sr. Engineering Technician to work in the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Engineering Support Group at the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility (RWF).
The RWF is one of the largest advanced wastewater treatment plants in the nation serving approximately 1.4 million residents living in a 300 sq mile service area. The RWF is now more than 50 years old and in need of a significant rehabilitation through capital improvement projects. O&M at RWF is an exciting opportunity that stands among one of the largest public improvement efforts in the South Bay.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
The Sr. Engineering Technician positions will be responsible for providing technical support to a variety of wastewater improvement projects from planning through detailed design, bid and award, construction management, and contract administration support in O&M, including a variety of procurement activities and document management. Organizational skills and SharePoint experience a plus. The Sr. Engineering Technician position is a middle level class in the Engineering Technical series. This position works under the general supervision of a professional engineer and may supervise Engineering Technicians. Typical duties for this position include the following: Assisting the Project Manager in delivery of projects related to Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Engineering; collect and analyze field, operational and technical data; and research wastewater equipment, material costs and specifications, contract administration and construction management support; assisting with the review and/or development of engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, construction contracts, and bid summaries; preparation of CAD drawings, diagrams, maps, and other presentation material; performing field inspections, assisting consultants with condition assessment, site investigation and potholing; maintaining and updating CAD standards and record drawings, and interfacing effectively with consultants, contractors, operations and maintenance staff, and other city department staff.
Education: Successful completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate).
Experience: Six (6) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering/technical support experience of which two (2) years of experience includes preparing engineering drawings, contract specification, and cost estimates; drafting and structural detailing for final plans; construction or infrastructure inspection; or field surveying.
Acceptable Substitutions: Successful completion of two (2) academic years or sixty (60) semester units of college level engineering technology courses or related field may be substituted for the remaining two (2) of four (4) years of sub-professional engineering/technical support experience. There will be no substitution for the two (2) years of experience preparing engineering drawings, contract specification, and cost estimates; drafting and structural detailing for final plans; construction or infrastructure inspection; or field surveying.
Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.
