The Fire and Gas Detection Technician will test, inspect, calibrate and maintain fire and gas related equipment as well as interface with instrumentation equipment affecting process areas. Occasional repair and installation of fire and gas related equipment is required.
- Calibrate, adjust, makes minor repairs to, and install fire and gas equipment
- Record and evaluate test data
- Perform functional testing, including the interface to process control and shutdown systems
- Uses and cares for tools and equipment employed to perform calibration and testing such as digital / analog multi-meters, gas calibration devices, thermocouple calibrators, signal generators, leak detection units, oscilloscopes, and manufacturer’s specialized test equipment
- Examine work and materials for compliance with job and safety specifications
- Job setup including: Selecting proper tools, equipment and materials.
- Attend various components of technical, developmental and safety training
- Promote safe work practices and implement company and client safety policies for work crew, including proper hazard recognition and mitigation
- Demonstrate support for the company's environmental management system
- Safely operate company owned vehicles including pick trucks and box vans.
- Follow verbal/written directions from the Crew Lead and Foreman.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
- Knowledge and thorough understanding of Fire Alarm and Suppression system installation, maintenance and testing
- Ability to use tools and equipment applicable to Fire and Gas related work
- Able to read and interpret drawings, specifications, vendor data, technical data sheets, etc.
- Able to demonstrate general knowledge of:
- NFPA Standards, the Alaska Administrative Code, and OSHA safe work practices associated with safety systems
- The functional operations, maintenance, and adjustment of the various components of fire and gas detection systems such as fire detection devices, smoke detection devices, gas detection devices, notification appliances, fire and gas control logic, etc.
- Calibration and trouble shooting of detection devices, panels and related equipment
- Remote reporting and interconnecting systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and Supervisor Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and Digital Alarm Communicator Transmitters / Receivers (DACT / R.)
- Fire and gas alarm and shutdown systems as related to explosion proof environments.
- Proficient in computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, and BP’s CMMS.
- Well versed in general operations and safety practices and policies, as well as specific knowledge of procedures and standards applicable to the Fire and Gas craft technical and safety policies.
- Ability to communicate clearly with coworkers and supervision.
- Ability to work as part of a team with fellow workers, supervisors and your alternate
- Advanced knowledge and ability to troubleshoot fire and gas alarm systems
- Ability to mentor and train lower level Technicians

- Lift 35 lbs from floor to knuckles x 2 with a 12 second interval.
- Lift 35 lbs from floor to waist x 2 with a 12 second interval.
- Lift 35 lbs from floor to shoulders x 2 with a 12 second interval.
- Repetitive lifts of 35 lbs to shoulder x 5 with 12 second intervals.
- Carry Test: Carry 35 lbs with two hands for a distance of 50 feet x 2, for a total of 100 feet. (Allow a 60 second rest break after the first carry of 50 feet)
- Slanted Ladder: Climb up and down 10 rungs x 2, for a total of 20 rungs. Self-paced but continuous.
- Use hands overhead for 5 minutes.
- Sustained Kneeling Test: Kneel for 5 minutes while allowing ability to change weight transfer on knees as preferred.
- Repetitive Kneeling Test: Perform from standing, kneel on one knee, alternate from left to right knee, x 5 each knee.
- Repetitive Stoop Test: Perform from standing position, bend forward at waist as far as possible without bending the knees with hands reaching toward the floor x 5, self-paced, but continuous,
- Repetitive Squat Test: Perform a functional squat and stand x 5, and
- Twist and Flex Test: Perform from standing alternate toe touches x 5 to each side to assess ability to twist and flex the trunk repetitively.

This position is located on the North Slope and requires a rotational work schedule.
