General: The Lyles College of Engineering at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for an academic teaching, research, and student mentoring faculty member to develop curriculum and partnerships with industry in the high-speed rail engineering field. It is anticipated we will be hiring a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor. Appointment as tenured Full Professor, or as a temporary Lecturer is possible for an exceptional case.
Fresno is the starting point of the United States' first High Speed Rail project, currently in construction in California. Given the vanguard character of this field and its significant environmental, economic and social implications on the region, and given the rapidly changing face of the transportation field in the world and the region, Fresno State has established its interdisciplinary Fresno State Transportation Institute which also serves as one of four partners representing the California State University Transportation Consortium. This position aims to establish a High Speed Rail focus at Fresno State and expand Fresno State's transportation expertise.
Responsibilities of the position include: 1. Developing collaborative partnerships with high speed rail industry (e.g. railroad operators, planners, and maintainers), external entities such as research institutes, government agencies, and other universities, and also with faculty at California State University, Fresno; 2. Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in one or more of the engineering disciplines offered in the Lyles College; 3. Developing and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses and laboratories in Railway Engineering and other related areas; 4. Actively engaging in student mentoring, research, scholarship and service activities; 5. Seeking external funding to support research and scholarly activities; 6. Supervising student research including graduate projects and theses.

The Lyles College of Engineering, California State University, Fresno, offers six nationally accredited Bachelor of Science degree programs in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Geomatics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and graduate degree programs/options in Civil Engineering, Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Over 1700 students were enrolled in the College's programs in Fall 2018. The home department of this position will be determined at the time of hire, based on degree and discipline area of the candidate selected.
Construction of the California's high speed rail system is in full swing and is expected to continue across the state of California until at least 2025. Many national and international infrastructure companies have established offices in Fresno for the project. Required Education An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Rail, Systems Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline and a BS degree in engineering from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.
Required Experience 1. Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds; 2. Academic, research, or industry expertise in rail-related engineering is required. 3. Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent communication and multi-disciplinary industry interaction skills and a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence.
Preferred Experience: Professional practice experience in railway industry.
For Associate or Tenured Professor: Appointment to Associate Professor or Tenured Full Professor requires evidence of a substantially higher level of experience and accomplishment in teaching and scholarly productivity. In addition, an appointment with tenure requires previously awarded tenure and a recommendation from the faculty.
For a Lecturer (temporary): 1. Appointment to temporary lecturer requires an MS or Ph.D. degree in Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical, Rail, Systems Engineering, or engineering discipline and a BS degree in engineering from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent. 2. At least ten years of industry/research experience in rail-related engineering.
