The Engineering Division of the City of Urbana Public Works Department is accepting applications for a Drainage Engineering Intern. Working closely with City Engineering staff, the selected candidate will perform basic surveying, AutoCAD drafting and construction inspection on street reconstruction projects, as well as assisting in surveying and inspecting street reconstruction work including resurfacing, paving and sewer construction; measuring quantities of work completed, testing materials used, and calculating pay quantities for contract work.
Qualifications include: • One (1) or more years of college courses in engineering, construction materials, inspection, and testing; or three (3) months or more of similar work experience. Some wastewater or hydraulic/hydrology courses or experience preferred. • Knowledge of GIS mapping techniques and ability to use computer spreadsheet and word processing software. • Ability to collect and process background information, perform GIS database input for existing sewer system, and provide assistance in developing database for hydraulic modeling of sewer system. • Ability to lift a 50-pound manhole lid. • Must possess and maintain a current State of Illinois Class D driver's license. • Preferred start date: May 13, 2019 For complete information, please refer to the job description, which can be downloaded at the bottom-right side of this page. Preference will be given to: 1. Students currently enrolled in a civil engineering program or a related major and carrying at least twelve (12) credit hours in the next semester at an accredited college; 2. Students in their final semester or quarter who need less than full- time enrollment to graduate with a degree in civil engineering or a related field need only be enrolled part-time in courses required for degree completion.
