The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a highly accomplished scholar and strategic leader as Head of the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering (ISE). The Department is in an exciting time of research and innovation, and offers degrees at the bachelors, masters, and doctoral levels. ISE is internationally renowned due to its successful faculty, educational programs, and state-of-the-art research facilities. The Department houses approximately 35 tenure system and specialized faculty members, 520 undergraduate students, and approximately 120 graduate and professional students. Core research areas such as data analytics, optimization and computing, operations research, decision and control, design and manufacturing, allow the Department to provide leadership and collaboration opportunities. This year marked the naming of the "College of Engineering" to "The Grainger College of Engineering". The College expanded the Health Care Engineering Systems Center (led by ISE faculty) to an endowment of over $100M and recently announced the launch a $100M corporate center in Networked Intelligent Components and Environments. Many large-scale efforts are underway across the college and campus via interdisciplinary research units such as the Coordinated Science Lab, the Information Trust Institute, the Applied Research Institute, the Micro and Nanotechnology Lab, the Health Care Engineering Systems Center, and with clinical partners such as Carle Foundation Hospital, OSF Healthcare System, and the Mayo Clinic.
The discipline of ISE is rapidly evolving to have an unprecedented demand and impact. The digital transformation of our society and all aspects of industry taking hold as the 4th industrial revolution, and the demands for talent in systems engineering in academia and industry are exploding at all fronts. Areas of research such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, statistical inference, robotics, autonomy, human factors and ergonomics, systems design, healthcare and biomedical applications, etc., provide tremendous opportunities for impact, research, education, and translation. ISE seeks a new Head to lead it through this period of strategic growth. Over the last five years, the Department increased its faculty by 20%, research expenditures by 60%, graduate enrollment by 40%, and undergraduate enrollment by 10% and is now ranked in the top 10 undergraduate programs in the country. The College of Engineering recognizes the opportunities presented by the changing field of ISE and expects the incoming Head to bring the department to the next level of excellence, and collaborate across the college and campus to further enhance the Department's research, education, and service missions.
The Department Head is a tenured full Professor in Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering who reports to the Dean of The Grainger College of Engineering. Applicants must have an earned Ph.D., a scholarly record commensurate with the level of a full professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a renowned reputation in research. Ideal candidates include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and service endeavors. The position has responsibilities for leading the faculty in the development of research, teaching, and public service, as well as engaging with industry, private foundations and alumni to advance the success and excellence of the Department. The position also has primary oversight for all administrative, budgetary and promotion decisions for the Department. The successful candidate will:
lead the Department by presenting a compelling vision for ISE;
sustain and expand the scholarly excellence of the Department, and work towards becoming the leading ISE program in the country;
foster, advocate, and promote cutting-edge, innovative undergraduate and graduate curricula as well as multidisciplinary research collaborations through effective leadership and management;
demonstrate a commitment to diversity and work with faculty and staff to promote and create initiatives for diversity and inclusion throughout the Department;
promote an engaging and supportive environment for Assistant and Associate faculty members, grounded on effective mentoring and academic and professional development;
leverage both existing and new long-term connections with industry to better position ISE as a leader for cutting-edge research and industry partnerships;
endorse a culture of active alumni engagement with the Department that celebrates its graduates as agents of its impact to the world and as the stewards of its long-term excellence;
direct the Department's advancement campaign and establish strategic engagement and partnerships with foundations and private institutions that share the department's passion and vision for overall excellence.
