Job Purpose and Summary
This is skilled and technical work participating in the inspection and testing of construction materials, as well as the inspection of workmanship on construction projects. Emphasis is placed upon attention to detail and the ability to secure a high quality of workmanship. Work is reviewed by a technical supervisor through the analysis of reports and observation of performance.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Reviews the inspection of work and performs material sampling on highway, building or bridge construction projects.
Conducts an audit of project records and documentation.
Assists with the investigation of construction problems, construction-related material problems and inspection activities.
Observes, inspects and verifies that the methods, materials and equipment and workmanship conform to established quality requirements, standards and specifications.
Assists the Quality Assurance Manager in recommending procedural and specification changes to improve the quality of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commissions’ (PTC) operations.
Maintains records and documentation for Quality Assurance Reports.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with contractors and construction workers.
Reads and interprets civil engineering plans, maps and specifications.
Works harmoniously with other employees and relates positively with customers.
Work shifts are dependent on contractor work activities. Work shifts and times are variable with substantial night work.
Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent certificate.
Possession of a NICET Level 3 certification in a Civil Engineering Technology related program.
Possession of valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Position demands include frequent speaking, writing and reading of reports. Position requires frequent work at a computer utilizing business programs and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission-specific operating systems. Position may demand occasionally working long hours in emergency situations or for extended work assignments. Position requires the physical capability to appropriately standing, stoop, walk, lift, and carry heavy tools and equipment when necessary. Position requires occasional travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Office environment with low to moderate levels of noise, adequate lighting and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable environmental conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
